About the area

The Machars of Galloway offer peace, tranquility and an amazing variety of activities for the visitor.

With mile upon mile of stunning coastline and unspoilt countryside, this is the perfect place for a range of activities including:
  • Walking
  • Biking
  • Climbing
  • Sailing
  • Diving, swimming and paddling
  • Bird-watching
  • Hunting
  • Fishing
  • Golf

Galloway also has some of the darkest night skies in Europe (very little light pollution) which make the area perfect for astronomers and amateur star-gazers alike.

There are also several great golf courses nearby including St Medans and Wigtown and, for book lovers, no visit to the area would be complete without visiting Scotland’s National Book Town at nearby Wigtown.

The Whithorn area is rich in history – Celtic, Roman, early Christian and mediaeval, with the Isle’s cairn built upon an Iron Age settlement.

Whithorn itself, a mediaeval city with a present-day population of little over 900, is the cradle of Christianity, the history of which is charted in the Whithorn Trust Visitor Centre. St Ninian’s cave can also be visited and is a place of annual pilgrimage.

For those who enjoy history, there are also several sites with standing stones, ancient ruins and cairns to visit. Britain’s largest Local Nature Reserve and Osprey Visitor Centre are at Wigtown (15 minutes' drive away from the Isle) and Britain’s largest forest, the Galloway Forest Park, is just 25 minutes' drive away.

Visit Garlieston, a pretty harbour village some 10 minutes away by car and you will see the harbour where the Mulberry pontoons were tested that were so critical for the Allied D-Day landings in Normandy in World War II.

You might also spot the local sub-aqua diving club in the waters off the Isle, Port William or Garlieston where there are numerous shipwrecks to be explored.
